Eskom meets with unions on turnaround strategy

Eskom says it has begun talks with unions on how to co-create a power utility for the future.

The power utility said in a statement it and its organised labour unions, the National Union of Mineworkers, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa and Solidarity, met on Friday in an effort to strengthen relations and for Eskom to share the company’s turnaround strategy.

Eskom’s acting Group Chief Executive Officer, Jabu Mabuza led the meeting and promised to create fertile ground to allow for unions and the embattled state-owned enterprise to have mutually beneficial engagements beyond his term.

The meeting with the three unions came after Mineral Resources and Energy Minister, Gwede Mantashe indicated that unions would have to support the government’s plans to split the power utility into three separate units.

Mabuza said all the parties had agreed to further discussions.
