Motshekga happy with first week of matric exams

The Department of Basic Education says it roped in the police and a chopper to assist in delivering exam papers to schools affected by last week's floods in the Eastern Cape.

Department spokesperson, Panyaza Lesufi, says they adjusted their logistic arrangements.

"Besides day one when there were the massive floods we partnered with the weather bureau and we managed to identify patterns and on the basis of that were able to adjust our logistic arrangements and we are quite convinced now that the arrangements are working," he said.

"We have never had any major headache except (here) and there where learners arrived late because of transport problems. But, generally, our logistical support still remains very strong."

Meanwhile, Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, says the first week of the 2012 National Senior Certificate Examination got off to a good start with minimal incidents or irregularities related to exams.

"I thank all the Department's officials for their vigilance and continued support to our learners at this important time in their lives. I understand that this is a time of high pressure but I urge them to remain calm in the execution of their duties as the whole nation is counting on us", she said.

Motshekga said in a statement that "some provinces also experienced delays in starting on time, this for differing reasons, but as there are rapid response mechanisms put in place to deal such; these kicked in and all situations were dealt with immediately and no learners have been disadvantaged."

"I'm especially happy with the reports indicating the determination of our learners throughout the country and I urge their parents to give them all the support they need. The bad weather across the country could have been a whole lot more challenging had we not put in place contingency plans to deal with them" the Minister added.

The 2012 National Senior Certificate (NSC) Examination will conclude on the 28th November 2012.
