Mothers arrested after children die in shack fires

Police in Mpumalanga have expressed their concern over parents who leave their minor children unattended and alone at night.

This follows after three children were killed in two separate fires where kids were left alone during the night.

Colonel Donald Mdhluli says that on Monday, a three-year-old girl died in a house fire in an informal settlement in Belfast where she was left in the care of her two older siblings, aged seven and nine.

The older children managed to escape and their mother has since been arrested on a charge of culpable homicide and child neglect.

He says a similar incident was reported last Friday at Masoyi where two young girls, aged seven and eight, burnt to death in a shack.

Colonel Mdhili says a third mother was also arrested on a charge of child neglect after she left her three minor children, who included a baby, unattended in her house in Bushbuckridge.

Neighbours thought the mother was missing but police found her the following day drinking at a tavern.
She is expected to appear in court on Thursday.
