Cape Town fire largely contained but City not out of danger

Firefighters from Working on Fire (WOF) busy with mop-up operations in the Deer park area

Working on Fire

The wildfire that broke out on the slopes of Table Mountain on Sunday morning has been largely contained.

The WC minister of Local Government and Environment Affairs Anton Bredell says the danger is not over yet and firefighters will remain on the ground for the next few days to continue to dampen down the affected areas and monitor the area for flareups.

He says a full assessment of the damage will be done once the fire has been extinguished and the investigation into the cause conducted.

Bredell says 11 structures have been damaged or destroyed over the last three days, two homes in Rosebank, six buildings on the University of Cape Town campus, two Heritage buildings and the restaurant at the Rhodes memorial.

Nine civilians were taken to hospital with breathing challenges after smoke inhalation and six firefighters sustained injuries in the line of duty.

A ministerial residence owned by the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure in Newlands was also destroyed but nobody was home during the fires.

A suspect in his thirties is expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrates Court on Tuesday following his arrest for alleged arson.
