Mother sentenced to decade behind bars for trying to kill her disabled son

A Northern Cape woman will spend a decade behind bars after she tried to kill her disabled son.

The 40-year-old woman who lives in Kagisho just outside of Kimberley was sentenced to 10 years in the Galeshewe Regional Court last week.

According to police, the mother was drinking alcohol with her friends on the afternoon of the 16th December 2018 when her husband reportedly went to a local mechanic.

The wife was angered by this and damaged his vehicle with a beer bottle.

Upon his return, he was informed by his 15-year-old son, who is wheelchair-bound, that his mother damaged their vehicle.

Police say the woman was so upset that she removed her child from his wheelchair, put him on his bed, doused him with paraffin and set him alight.

The child was rescued by the father and some family members who managed to extinguish the fire.

The teenagers spent five months in the hospital with serious burn wounds.

The mother was arrested on the same day and charged with attempted murder.
