The DA's Executive Mayor of Tshwane, Stevens Mokgalapa says he intends to resign before the next Council meeting at the end of February.
He said in a statement on Sunday that although it was a tough decision, the most important consideration was to put the people of Tshwane first.
Mokgalapa said in his view, stepping down would pave the way for further progress beyond that which was achieved during his term thus far.
The embattled mayor has been on special leave since November last year, following the release of an audio recording of him allegedly having sex with a council official which went viral on social media.
In December, the DA appointed councillor Abel Tau as acting mayor of Tshwane.
