The South African Human Rights Commission says it is taking former Gqeberha ward councillor and Member of Parliament Renaldo Gouws to the Equality Court for his alleged hate speech and racist utterances.
Commission spokesperson, Wisani Baloyi, said they would institute proceedings in the Equality Court in Gqeberha on Thursday.
"Following assessment of the content, the Commission has concluded that utterances allegedly made by Gouws constitute hate speech and harassment as contemplated in terms of sections 10 and 11 of the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act 2000 (PEPUDA or Equality Act)."
Baloyi also said that given Gouws' position as MP, his alleged actions carry even greater weight and responsibility as he is expected to uphold and embody the principles enshrined by the Constitution including human dignity, equality, and non-discrimination.
This is after a new video of him making a racist rant made the rounds on social media on Wednesday.
The Democratic Alliance also announced Gouws' suspension on Thursday morning.
