More than 900 000 vehicles stopped and checked by authorities

The Department of Transport says traffic officials stopped and checked more than 910 248 vehicles country-wide in May as part of the National Rolling Enforcement Plan.
The Department says a total of 243 130 notices had also been issued for various traffic offences while over 2300 vehicles were discontinued and more than 1700 vehicles impounded.
Transport Minister, Ben Martins, has reiterated the call to all South African to take personal charge and responsibility for their safety on the roads, be they drivers, passengers or pedestrians.
He says South Africa is a signatory to the UN's Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 campaign which aims to reduce road deaths around the world by 50%.
"We call on all South Africans to play their part in helping us in the achievement of this important milestone", said Minister Martins.
