More than 700 motorists arrested over Easter Weekend

More than 700 motorists were arrested for various traffic violations across the country over the Easter weekend

Spokesperson for the Road Traffic Management Corporation Simon Zwane says the offences include drunken driving, speeding and overloading.

About 350 cars and 1 000 buses were impounded for being unroadworthy.

Police stopped and checked about 180 000 vehicles and issued 30 000 fines over the weekend.

Zwane appealed to drivers returning home to avoid speeding and dangerous overtaking, and to keep a safe following distance.

High traffic volumes are expected on the countries roads today as motorists head back home after the Easter weekend.
