More than 160 motorists face fraud and corruption charges

JOHANNESBURG, December 26 (ANA) – More than 160 motorists face charges related to fraud and corruption after they were arrested for possession false driving documents, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said on Saturday.

“Law enforcement authorities have been on high alert for fraud and corruption this festive season in an effort to improve compliance with road regulations and reduce fatalities,” said Simon Zwane, the RTMC spokesman.

“A taxi driver who allegedly tried to bribe an undercover anti-corruption officer was arrested in Johannesburg this weekend.”

Zwane said a Tshwane metro officer was arrested for soliciting bribes at a roadside law enforcement operation last weekend.
He said incidents of fraud and corruption can be reported by calling 0861 400 800.

At least 805 000 vehicles have been stopped in various roadblocks throughout the country since December 1.

“More than 1660 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, 276 for overloading goods, 199 for overloading passengers and 117 for driving at excessive speeds,” said Zwane.

He said so far the highest unlawful speed was recorded in the Free State, where a Porsche driver was nabbed driving at 224km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N1.
