Human rights organisation, Just Detention International says its working hard to challenge the attitudes around prison rape.
It says it is calling for magistrates to be sensitised around the issue.
Government officials and people in the public eye are also urged to not make careless comments about the abuse.
Spokesperson, Sasha Gear says prison rape remains something that tears apart the lives of many prisoners.
She says it also perpetuates cycles of violence in communities upon the release of inmates...
"Prison is not an environment that is removed from society. These are our fathers, brothers, sons. But, most of them are also returned back in society, so if they are brutalised in prison, they bring with them the trauma, the ill-health, often the HIV, that they were subjected to in prison," she said.
