The SA Institute of Race Relations says there are more people on social welfare than with jobs.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Institute says that In 2001, for every 330 people with jobs, 100 people were receiving social grants.
By 2012 the ratio had decreased to 90 people in employment for every 100 on social welfare.
With over 16 million social grant beneficiaries in 2013/14, social grant expenditure is expected to rise to approximately 113 billion rand this financial year.
The highest proportions will be spent on old-age pension and child support grant transfers, at 39% and 37% respectively.
Lerato Moloi, acting head of research at the Institute says, ‘If this trend continues, South Africa’s tax base will not grow fast enough to keep supporting the millions of vulnerable individuals who rely on monthly cash transfers from the State’.
