One South Africa Movement leader Mmusi Maimane said he's traumatised following an armed robbery that he was involved in at a bar in Claremont in Cape Town on Wednesday night.
The former DA leader described the incident as surreal and said it felt like a movie.
In an Instagram post, Maimane said barely 30 minutes after he and his brother-in-law arrived at the bar shortly before 8 pm, three gunmen stormed the venue and pulled out guns.
He said the gunmen proceeded to rob patrons at every table.
Maimane has called for private security companies like ADT and Fidelity to form a greater part of localised policing.
"I don’t give up on our crime, we have to fight," he continued.
"We have to ensure policing is effective and the criminal justice system works. The Phangela’s, ADT, Fidelity, Metro police need to form a greater part of localised policing. Put fear back on criminals and not on citizens. We have a long way to go, starting with best minister of police and a government that will ensure the safety of its citizens."
Western Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that a case of business robbery was underway.
"According to reports, unknown suspects entered the restaurant and threatened the supervisor and staff with a firearm. The suspects fled the scene with cellular telephones and an undisclosed amount of cash. No shots were fired and no injuries were reported," Sergeant Twigg said in a statement.
Maimane said he doubted that the robbers would be apprehended.
"I must be honest, not sure those guys will get arrested. I hope so, it will be less criminals on the road [sic]."
