Police in Delmas, Mpumalanga confiscated a 6.35mm Beretta firearm which was found in the possession of a group of minors on Wednesday.
Spokesperson Brigadier Leonard Hlathi says two police members were on routine patrol when they noticed a group of children, aged between 6 and 9, playing next to a dumping site.
He said police were concerned as these kids were supposed to be at home and inquired about their safety.
The officer saw one of the children holding something that looked like a gun and initially assumed that it was a toy, however, when the kids started running, police became suspicious and gave chase.
Brigadier Hltahti says once they recovered the gun it was confirmed at the police station that the firearm was stolen in a house robbery in Bloemspruit in the Free State in September last year.
