The Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture Zizi Kodwa has been arrested and is expected to make his first appearance in court on charges of corruption involving R1.7 million.
The case against Kodwa in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court on Wednesday comes after the former boss of the JSE-listed tech company, EOH, Jehan MacKay implicated the minister at the state capture commission.
Mackay testified that Kodwa accepted payment from him when he was the then deputy minister of State Security.
The report released in April of 2022 showed that Kodwa allegedly bought a luxury vehicle for almost a million rand back in 2015.
The Minister said it was a transaction among friends and not a bribe, however, the State Capture report recommended that President Cyril Ramaphosa consider removing Kodwa as the then Deputy Minister of State Security.
Kodwa was then promoted to the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture.
The ANC has not yet ordered Kodwa to step aside as per party rules.
Kodwa was arrested alongside Jehan MacKay who is currently applying for bail.
The Minister's arrest comes at a delicate time for the ANC, of which Kodwa is a senior member.
Its top brass is holding talks to form a coalition government after the party suffered a serious setback in last week's general elections, slipping below 50 per cent of the vote for the first time since the advent of democracy in 1994.
