The Department of Basic Education (DBE) says it will be doubling its efforts after this year's Grade 12 Mathethethics paper 2 was leaked on Monday.

Education Minister, Angie Motshekga briefed the media in Pretoria on Wednesday following an urgent meeting with the Council of Education.

She said the department is investigating the extent and the origins of the leak which they believe came from pupils who shared the paper via WhatsApp.

The DBE said they have evidence that the paper was first shared in Gauteng and Limpopo before eventually reaching KZN, the Western Cape and Mpumalanga.

A decision on whether or not matrics would have to re-write the exam will only be made once the investigation is complete.

The department said learners, who received the paper, have been coming forward.

Meanwhile, the department says 93 grade 12 learners, including 53 from Eastern Cape, tested positive for Covid19 on the first day of the matric exams and they will now continue to write their exams in isolation.
