Millions of rand have been set aside for the removal of asbestos in the Free State.

COGTA MEC Mxolisi Dukwana, during his 2022/23 budget speech on Tuesday, gave the assurance that asbestos eradication will commence in due course.

Several accused, including former Free State premier Ace Magashule, currently face varying charges relating to the alleged looting of R255 million in a failed 2014 asbestos removal project.

Department spokesperson Sello Dithebe says R20 million has been set aside to remove asbestos from 70 sites across the province in the current financial year.

He says some sites were built before our democracy and therefore the structural integrity might be affected, meaning that the entire structure will have to be removed.
