The Public Service Commission says national government departments have spent R52m on salaries for 1, 559 employees who were placed on precautionary suspension in the 2010/2011 financial year.
The Commission also confirmed that poor monitoring of precautionary suspensions resulted in officials being off for extensive periods pending the finalisation of their cases.
Reacting to the report, the Democratic Alliance said it was time that newly appointed Minister of Public Service and Administration, Roy Padayachie, demonstrate that he is making an impact on some of the key challenges facing his department.
