Michaelhouse hockey player suspended over alleged use of racial slur

Prestigious schools Michaelhouse and St John's College have both condemned all forms of racism and discriminatory behaviour.

This, after a hockey match between the KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng schools had to be cancelled this weekend over a racial slur.

It is alleged a Michaelhouse player used a racial slur against a St John's College player during the derby day match on Friday evening.

In a joint statement to parents, the private schools say the Michaelhouse boy who allegedly made the racial slur has been suspended pending a formal disciplinary hearing.

It says they are both committed to working together to ensure their students affirm and respect the dignity of all people.

The incident led to the cancellation of the entire sporting programme on Saturday.
