Two men who were arrested earlier this year for transporting abalone worth over R9 million have been sentenced to 365 days in prison.

Police spokesperson Zinzi Hani says 36-year-old Lawrence Muroma and 28-year-old Qing Quen Feng were sentenced in the Cape Town Regional Court on Monday.

The duo was arrested in May this year by a multi-disciplinary team at a village called Philadelphia in the Western Cape.

Hani says the men were driving a truck and an Audi A3 in which police found 23 896 units of dried abalone hidden in false compartments.

The hawks also confiscated R50 000 in cash.

The vehicles have since been forfeited to the State.

The two accused pleaded guilty to money laundering and selling and transporting abalone.
