SAPS: Western Cape
Western Cape Police have confiscated 30 bags of Mandrax tablets on the N1 at Beaufort West with a street value of R1.5 million.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Chris Spies says the drugs were seized on Friday during a routine operation by members attached to the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Narcotics Unit.
He says they were busy with routine vehicle checks along the N1 when they noticed a silver Toyota Corolla parked at a nearby petrol station.
The driver started acting suspiciously when he saw the police members and when they approached him, he offered them R400 to escort him past traffic officials patrolling the highway.
Sergeant Spies says the suspect was promptly arrested on a charge of bribery.
The Narcotics Unit members then searched his vehicle and found 30 000 mandrax tablets in bags concealed in the boot and panels of the car.
Police confiscated the find and seized the vehicle.
The suspect, a Zimbabwean national, remains in police custody and is expected to appear in court on Monday on charges of dealing in drugs and bribery.
