The Department of Correctional Services said two men sentenced for rape and assault escaped from the Correctional Centre in Makhanda.
Department spokesperson, Nobuntu Gantana, said the 36-year-old Lonwabo Ngqokowana and 37-year-old Luzuko Sabatha made their escape on Saturday afternoon.
She said the Department was still investigating the circumstances which led to the escape.
The two inmates were serving sentences for rape, aggressive assault, kidnapping, and stock theft.
Gantana said they are considered dangerous and anyone who may have information on their whereabouts to contact their nearest police station.
