Gauteng police have launched a manhunt after six inmates escaped from custody in Vosloorus.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Brenda Muridili, says they were able to make their escape after the police vehicle was ambushed by three armed men driving a silver Audi.
Muridili says five of the six escapees, who are all Zimbabwean nationals, were due in court in Vosloorus on Friday in connection with a business robbery in Dawn Park.
She says they also faced charges of attempted murder and the possession of an unlicensed firearm.
The sixth escapee was due to make his first court appearance on a shoplifting charge.
