Mandela admitted to hospital for tests

Former president Nelson Mandela was admitted to a Pretoria hospital for medical tests late on Saturday, just short of a year since his last known hospital visit.

Spokesperson in the Presidency, Mac Maharaj says President Jacob Zuma announced that Mandela was admitted to undergo tests, but added that there was no cause for concern.

94-year old Madiba was admitted to hospital in February this year for a diagnostic procedure.

The Presidency appealed to the media and the public to respect the privacy of Mandela and his family.

Meanwhile, the Congress of South African Trade Unions has sent its best wishes to Mandela.

Cosatu spokesperson, Patrick Craven says Madiba had always been a constant inspiration, through apartheid, jail and exile, the mass uprisings of the eighties, negotiations, and the days of liberation and reconstruction.

He says his leadership was key to South Africa's ultimate breakthrough.
