A 21-year-old man who raped and assaulted his mother in June last year was sentenced by the High Court in Clocolan in the Free State to life in prison on Wednesday.
The man was also sentenced to another four months for assaulting his mother with a Bible.
Police Spokesperson Colonel Thandi Mbambo says the accused, who was high on drugs during the incident, arrived at his mother's home in the middle of the night and accused her of being possessed by demons.
She says after the assault he raped his mother.
Her desperate screams were heard by neighbours who came to her rescue.
