Man who hijacked Anni Dewani granted parole

Anni Dewani

One of the men who was sentenced for the murder Anni Dewani has been granted parole.

Dewani's murder made international headlines when she was hijacked and shot while on honeymoon with her husband Shrien in Cape Town in 2010.

The 42-year-old Zola Tongo, who drove the car that hijacked the couple, was sentenced to 18 years in prison after making a deal with the State.

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) confirmed that Tongo will be released from prison on the 22nd of June 2022 and will be under supervision until June 2028.

In his plea bargain, he said that Anni's husband, Shrien, had offered him R15 000 to kill his bride.

Tongo also admitted sourcing two other men, Mziwamadoda Qwabe and Xolile Mngeni, who shot Anni.

The story sent shockwaves through the country.

Shrien, who was seen on CCTV footage in the company of Tongo was allowed to return home shortly after the murder but Anni's family was convinced of his involvement and demanded Justice.

The State tried for four years to extradite Dewani and when they finally succeeded in 2016, he was found not guilty due to insufficient evidence.

The State argued that Dewani felt trapped being in an arranged traditional wedding with Anni, due to his sexual orientation.

According to British Tabloids, Dewani has found happiness and married another man.
