A 20-year-old man rescued from drowning at Hout Bay beach on Wednesday, has died in the Groote Schuur Hospital.
Emergency services spokesperson Wilfred Solomon-Johannes says attempts by the medical staff at the hospital to completely resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
The National Sea Rescue Institute earlier said the man got into difficulty while swimming with a friend in a river.
His friend tried to help but was not a strong enough swimmer and struggled to save himself.
The man was airlifted to Groote Schuur Hospital in a critical condition.
