A foreign national from Malawi who allegedly spent money at the Rand Easter Show at NASREC in Gauteng using fake US dollars has been remanded in custody.
Fifty-eight-year-old John Gambi was arrested on Monday and remanded in custody until next week.
Police spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha says Gambi attempted to buy perfumes from a stall where he managed to get R3 600 cash as change.
He says when Gambi tried to do it again a few days later he was recognized by the stall manager who had since established that the currency used on on the first transaction was fake.
Gambi was arrested on the spot and the Hawks were summoned to the scene.
The accused was found in possession of 10 fake notes.
He will formally apply for bail on the 9th of April.
