Gauteng police seized counterfeit goods valued at an estimated R11 million following raids on 18 shops in Fordsburg in Johannesburg.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk, said they also seized R40 000 “in abandoned cash” while 37 undocumented foreign nationals were arrested during the operation on Thursday.
The team that executed a search and seizure warrant comprised of SAPS members, officials from the Department of Home Affairs, SARS, and ICASA, as well as “brand protectors” and private security.
Van Wyk said over 8000 items imitating well-known brands were seized during this operation including cell phones, cell phone charges and covers, as well as counterfeit labels.
She said during another operation on Wednesday, police seized counterfeit goods with an estimated value of R15 million also in Fordsburg.
One person was arrested on charges of possession, manufacturing, and dealing in counterfeit goods.
