A former Eastern Cape resident was released on R50 000 bail on Monday after he appeared briefly in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on charges of fraud, theft, forgery and uttering and contravention of the Food, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act.

The 59- year-old Stephen Wallace Weir of Fourways in Johannesburg appeared in connection with an incident in which his company, SERAC MRE (PTY) Ltd, allegedly forged the dates on boxes containing pre-packaged food rations for the SANDF by changing the labelling best before dates.

It covered the original expiry dates by placing stickers over them with a new date thus giving a misleading or false description.

Weir was arrested following police investigations and subsequent to video clips of SANDF members that surfaced during the lockdown showing the discrepancy of the dates.

The matter was postponed to the 25th of November for a provisional trial date to be set.
