The Hawks said that a 34-year-old man will appear in the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Monday for allegedly contravening the Cyber Crime Act.
Hawks spokesperson, Colonel Philani Nkwalase, said the arrest followed a probe into pornographic images of “unknown individuals” that were superimposed with images of President Ramaphosa and the Police Minister, Bheki Cele.
He said the arrest was made on Sunday after the images were distributed to police officers and members of the public on social media platforms.
“A 34-year-old suspect was traced and arrested in Azalea, Pietermaritzburg and his device that was allegedly used as well as sim cards were recovered in his possession,” Nkwalase said.
He said many pornographic images were allegedly found on his device.
Nkwalase said the bust was made by Gauteng members of the Crimes Against the State (CATS) team, together with Pietermaritzburg based Serious Organised Crime Investigation team of the Hawks.
