A man from Klawer in the Western Cape appeared in the local Magistrates Court on Monday in connection with the murder of a teenager.
According to police the 13-year-old Jerobejin van Wyk was accused of stealing fruit at the suspect’s residence.
It is alleged that Smit chased van Wyk with his vehicle and was never seen again.
Fifty-six-year-old Daniel Smit was arrested at his house on Friday after human remains were discovered in a sewerage pipe on his premises.
Police Spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut says the body of the victim is yet to be found and it is too soon to speculate on the identity of the remains that were found.
He says forensic experts are still investigating to find more leads.
A spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority Eric Ntabazalila says Smit is being charged with murder, kidnapping, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and defeating the ends of Justice.
He says Smit indicated through his lawyer that he would not be applying for bail.
The matter was postponed to the 26th of April for further investigation.
