The man arrested in connection with the murder and rape of four-year-old Bokgabo Poo was out on bail for allegedly raping another child.
This was revealed in court where 28-year-old Ntokozo Khulekani Zikhali made his first appeareance in the Benoni Magistrates Court on Monday.
A spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority Lumka Mahanjana says he is being charged with kidnapping, rape, murder and violation of a corpse.
She says it is alleged that on the 10th of October, Poo had gone to play with a five-year-old boy at a park in Watville where they were approached by the accused.
Zikhali allegedly gave the boy money for lollipops and lured the deceased to an unknown location.
Mahanjana says her parents reported her missing later in the day.
She says the following morning a neighbour was sweeping her yard when she came across a human leg, she alerted a neighbour and they phoned police.
Mahanjana says police obtained CCTV footage from a nearby tavern showing Poo walking with Zikhali.
She says when he became aware of the circulating footage he fled to Boksburg where he was eventually arrested on the 14th.
Zikhali was at a petrol station when the petrol attendee recognised him and alerted police who were also at the filling station.
The accused was out on bail for allegedly raping a nine-year-old girl.
The matter was postponed to Monday.
