Public Protector, advocate Thuli Madonsela, has called for greater protection for people who blow the whistle on corruption.
She was speaking on Thursday after receiving the Newsmaker of the Year Award 2011 from the Johannesburg Press Club.
The Public Protector said most acts of corruption and other wrong doing in the exercise of state power have been curtailed because of good women and men who do something when they see wrongdoing.
"Some have done so at the cost of their jobs and a few at the cost of their lives," she said.
"It is for this reason that as one of the guardians of the Protected Disclosures Act and the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act, my office has persistently called for the strengthening of whistle-blower protection," Madonsela added.
