Police in the Cape has had their hands full, dealing with looting and the vandalising of shops.

At least 17 suspects were arrested on Wednesday, after numerous incidents.

In one 24-hour period, at least 13 incidents were recorded by police.

Supermarkets were targeted in Elsies River and Delft.

In Elsies River, a supermarket on Halt Road was ambushed by a group of about 15 suspects who helped themselves to items valued at R3 000.

In Delft, 50 suspects stormed a supermarket and made off with grocery items valued at R4 000.

In Samora Machel, police were able to prevent the looting of a delivery truck, but the same group then tried to rob a nearby mall.

Meanwhile, in Vredenburg, a spaza shop and the home of a local councillor were also targeted by looters, who are disgruntled about a lack of food parcels.

The police's Brigadier Novela Potelwa says tracing operations for the remaining suspects continues.
