Environmental organisation, groundWork says Lonmin has been nominated as one of the world's worst companies of 2012.
Director, Bobby Peek, says the submission was based on the human rights violations and environmental destruction that the corporation has carried out since the establishment of its mine in the Marikana region.
Lonmin's name was submitted by groundWork and The Bench Marks Foundation for the Public Eye Awards.
The awards are a regular feature on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum meeting and are conducted by civic organisations from across the globe.
This year, the WEF meeting will take place in Davos, Switzerland from January 23 to 27.
On August 16 last year, 34 people died when police opened fire on striking miners in Marikana in North West.
