Mining company Lonmin has been commended by the Chamber of Mines for its safety achievements.
The chamber says in a statement issued on Monday the company had reached 17 million shifts without a fall of ground fatality at its Marikana operations in North West.
It says this is even more notable, given the considerable challenges that have beset Lonmin's operations in recent months.
The company's executive vice president, Mike Monroe says the safety achievement was a team effort, which focused on leadership, simplifying systems, creating an enabling environment, and a safety conscious culture.
Lonmin made headlines, when labour turbulence at its platinum mine in Marikana culminated in a violent clash between police and striking miners on August 16 last year.
A total of 34 mine workers were shot dead and 78 wounded.
