The Treasure the Karoo Action Group has won a significant court battle against the Minister of Mineral Resources, Susan Shabangu.
On Monday, the north Gauteng High Court ordered the Minister to provide the lobby group with the names of individuals who will make up the task team that will investigate the shale gas exploration in the Karoo.
The task team was established by cabinet in April to evaluate the technology of fracking, particularly with its applicability to South African conditions and report back to cabinet.
Oil company Shell is seeking permission to drill for shale gas in the Karoo.
Action Group spokesperson, Jonathan Deal, says they lodged an application last October in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act.
"We were issued with a court order, as a result of our application, requiring the Minister to deliver either the information to us or an affidavit stating why she refuses to deliver the information, by January 31. We have also had our costs awarded as well."
Deal says the court ruling was a significant victory for the TKAG.
