It's unclear whether it was the blistering Bloemfontein heat or sheer boredom that lead thousands at the Free State stadium to abandon the ANC's centenary celebrations as President Jacob Zuma fumbled his way through a speech that took almost two hours to deliver.
Zuma's speech was long on history and short on vision -- he focused heavily on the ANC's revolutionary past and did little to outline its future plans. This may prove to be a missed opportunity for the party, which has come under fire for the slow rate of progress since the end of apartheid and for increasing corruption and problems with service delivery.
