A man police have dubbed as the Glebeland killer will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Senzo Cele was sentenced to two life terms plus 48 years imprisonment in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Wednesday.
He was earlier found guilty on four counts of murder as well as the unlawful possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.
The National Prosecuting Authority said the murder convictions related to the death of Simphiwe Ndebele, who was shot dead by Cele in July 2018 at Glebelands hostel in Umlazi, Durban, following an argument.
“The second murder was of Siyabonga Mbhele in August 2018 at KwaMnyandu taxi rank. Cele was also convicted of the double murder of Joseph Nqaba Mbhele and Senzo Luthuli in October 2018,” the NPA said.
The Director of Public Prosecutions in KwaZulu-Natal, Advocate Elaine Zungu has welcomed the sentences imposed on Cele.
“There has been a huge outcry from the public at large for the NPA to deliver on its prosecutorial mandate and deal with these violent matters, especially those emanating from the Glebelands area,” she said.
Advocate Zungu also commended both the police and prosecution whom she said worked tirelessly to finalise this matter.
