A 30-year-old man has been jailed for an effective 25 years for killing off-duty Hawks officer, Captain Qeya Tshabalala.
Free State police said Ramolete Masiu was sentenced in the Bloemfontein High Court on Tuesday, more than two years after Tshabalala’s murder.
“He was sentenced to 25 years for murder and a further 15 years for robbery with aggravated circumstances. His sentence will run concurrently,” said SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Thandi Mbambo.
She said Tshabalala was shot multiple times on the 24 May 2018 after he responded to a complaint in Phelindaba in Mangaung.
Masiu, who was linked to the crime through DNA, was arrested in August 2019 after being on the run from 2018 when he was hospitalised for a gunshot shot wound he sustained during the shootout with Captain Tshabalala.
His accomplice, Sprinkaan Maema, is already serving 33 years for the murder.
