Labour Minister calls farmers to negotiate

Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant said that farmers must come to the negotiation table, to help end the violent strike by Western Cape farmworkers.

Oliphant said she is not convinced that there is a serious attempt by farmers to negotiate.

Meanwhile, the Western Cape government said Oliphant must act decisively to stop the violent strike.

It said that her deafening silence in the face of this crisis must be challenged.

Western Cape premier Helen Zille and provincial agricultural MEC Gerrit van Rensburg said in a joint statement that Oliphant should not "hide" behind calls to follow official processes.
