Labour department moots metal sector strike

The National Union of Metalworkers of SA says a proposal by the department of labour to end the wage strike in the metal sector has been made.

Numsa president Andrew Chirwa says they expect the proposal to be formally tabled at a council meeting between the unions and the employers on Tuesday.

The department of labour and the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration are facilitating the talks on Monday, after negotiations between Numsa and the employer body -- the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa, deadlocked.

Seifsa withdrew its conditional wage offer last week, after Numsa rejected it.

The conditional final offer was a 10% wage increase in 2014, 9.5% in 2015, and 9% in 2016.

More than 200,000 Numsa members in the metal and engineering sector downed tools on July 1st, demanding a salary increase of 12%.

They also demanded a R1000 housing allowance, and a total ban on labour brokers.
