The SA Weather Service has provided an explanation of the weather phenomenon which caused widespread flooding in Inanda in Durban and speculation that a tornado was the cause.
Forecaster, Wiseman Dlamini, says it was not a tornado that passed over Dube Villiage on Tuesday, bringing swirling, twisting winds and driving rain.
He says they describe the weather event as a landspout, which he says is quite similar, but the formation is different.
"With a tornado, they require a parent thunderstorm. In this case, it looks like there was evidence of an electrical storm being active over parts of Inanda and Phoenix areas," adding that even eyewitnesses did not mention anything about lightning or thunderstorms.
Meanwhile, the KZN Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, said the death from the devastating storm has risen to four, while one person is still missing.
Cogta spokesperson, Nonala Ndlovu, says 70 houses were also destroyed in Inanda, adding that there were about 113 houses that were also partially damaged. She said some people are being housed in community halls.
