The Knysna Municipality says it mourns the unnecessary death of the three young girls on Thursday around "Green Hole".
The Municipality said in a statement that the girls, all teenagers, were from Ethembeni, Concordia and Khayalethu.
None of them could swim.
Municipal manager, Lauren Waring, says according to reports the girls were walking with a 25-year old woman far into the lagoon in knee deep water.
They apparently unexpectedly stepped into a deep channel which they were unable to get out of.
The NSRI has meanwhile cautioned bathers to be aware of rip currents at this time.
