South African doctor Cyril Karabus is demanding R2 million in damages from the Canadian company which hired him to work in the United Arab Emirates in 2002.
His lawyer Michael Bagraim alleges that InterHealth Canada failed in their legal "duty of care" to Karabus.
He says the company knew about the manslaughter charge brought against Karabus and his eventual conviction in absentia in a UAE court in 2003.
Bagraim says the company should have contacted Karabus and offered him legal assistance after his arrest at a Dubai airport last year.
Karabus was acquitted in March but spent close on 9 months in the UAE before eventually being allowed to return to South Africa.
