Judgment expected in Amy Leigh kidnappers' bail application

Judgement in the bail hearing of the three suspects arrested for the kidnapping of 6-year-old Amy Leigh de Jager will be handed down in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate's Court on Friday.

A 27-year-old teacher Tharina Human who was a Grade RR teacher at Amy Leigh's school is accused of being the mastermind behind the kidnapping.

The 40-year-old Laetitia Nel and the 50-year-old Pieter van Zyl are her co-accused.

All three are being charged with kidnapping and extortion and have been in custody for over a month now - since their arrest.

The fourth suspect, a Lesotho national who is in the country illegally, will appear in the same court on Friday.

It is not yet clear if the 24-year-old Mohlomohi Bafokeng will appear alongside his co-accused as Friday he will only start was his formal bail application.

The State has strongly opposed bail for all four accused.

Human told the court in a written affidavit that she will plead not guilty to the charges against her while Van Zyl also intends to plead not guilty.

Nel has already given police a written confession which led to the arrests of Human and van Zyl.

Amy-Leigh's kidnapping made international headlines when the child was grabbed, allegedly by Bafokeng, outside her school in Vanderbijlpark, before fleeing in Nel's vehicle.

Van Zyl reportedly sourced Bafokeng to get involved and was tasked to also call the De Jager family to ask for a ransom of R2 million.

Nel, who confessed to her role in the matter, provided the vehicle used in the kidnapping as well as the cell phone used to make the ransom call.
