Judasa warns about bogus doctors

The Junior Doctors Association and the SA Medical Association have called for tough action to be taken to root out bogus doctors.

In a statement on Wednesday, Judasa said bogus doctors are operating in the Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal.

It says these bogus doctors are offering services ranging from abortions to increasing libido and providing treatment for many childhood ailments, amongst other services.

Judasa president, Dr Khopotso Pege, called for a more concentrated effort from particularly the health and police ministries to eradicate this dangerous scourge plaguing the country.

"We therefore appeal to all members of the public not to put their lives at risk by consulting these bogus doctors. All qualified medical doctors practising in South Africa are required by law to be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), and must be in possession of registration number starting with the letters MP and with a practice number (for surgeries) starting with the letters PR*.

"Our ethical medical doctors will not plaster advertisements all over lampposts, telephone booths, bridges and walls. We therefore reiterate our call to law enforcement authorities to work beyond the call of duty if need be to destroy this ever growing industry of bogus doctors. We call on the Minister of Health and Minister of Police to prioritise a campaign to eradicate this problem once and for all."
