A Johannesburg couple suspected of involvement in a sophisticated multi-million rand fraudulent VAT refund scam, have been arrested, the South African Revenue Service said.
SARS spokesperson Sandile Memela said Fazel Karodia and his wife Amina, both 43 years old, appeared in the Johannesburg Regional Court on Tuesday. The couple, who were granted bail of R75 000 and R25 000 respectively, will be back in court on 20 January 2016.
The suspected loss to the fiscus amounts to approximately R51 million
