Jason Rhode's mother pleads for leniency for her son

The mother of convicted wife killer Jason Rohde has appealed to the Western Cape High Court to be lenient when sentencing her son.

Testifying in mitigation of sentence on Monday, Brenda Rohde said that inside he has a heart of gold.

"I ask the court to be lenient, if for no other reason, for his children," she said.

Sentencing proceedings resumed on Monday after the trial adjourned on 6 December.

Rohde, who was convicted in November last year, spent Christmas in Pollsmoor prison after his bail application, pending sentence, was denied by Judge Gayaat Salie-Hlophe.

Earlier, two of Rohde’s friends were called to testify about his character to the court.

David Craig Livingstone, who has known Rohde since 2015, said: “I will just ask the court that Jason will be sentenced in the interest of fairness and empathy.”

A second witness, Craig Fleischer, also a friend of Rohde's said: “I just pray that the right decision and the right sentence would be issued to Jason.”

The former Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International CEO was found guilty of murdering his wife Susan Rohde and obstructing the ends of justice by staging her suicide.

The matter continues on Wednesday.
